Evanston, Illinois is an affluent suburban Chicago municipality on Lake Michigan on the North Shore in Cook County, Illinois directly north of the City of Chicago, east of Skokie, and south of Wilmette. Evanston was first settled in 1836 and has a total population of 74,239. It is part of Chicago's affluent North Shore region. Evanston is concurrently a city and township, according to state and municipal charters.

What Makes Evanston Unique?
- Northwestern University - (NU) is a nonsectarian, coeducational, private research university located in Evanston. The main campus is a 240-acre parcel in Evanston, along the shore of Lake Michigan.
- Grosse Point Lighthouse - is located in Evanston. Following several shipping disasters near Evanston, residents successfully lobbied the federal government for a lighthouse. Construction was completed in 1873. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 8, 1976.
- The Evanston History Center - is a private, non-profit educational and cultural institution established in 1898 to preserve and share Evanston history. EHC collects, preserves and tells the story of Evanston's past through the Charles Gates Dawes House, interactive and engaging museum exhibits, research room and collections, educational programs, and book publishing.
