Edgewater is a North Chicago, Illinois, community seven miles north of downtown. It is bordered by the neighborhoods of Rogers Park to the north, Uptown to the south, Lincoln Square to the west and south and West Ridge to the west and north. As one of Chicago’s 77 official community areas, Edgewater is bounded by Foster on the south, Devon on the north, Ravenswood on the west, and Lake Michigan on the east. Edgewater contains several beaches that residents enjoy in the warm months. Historically, Edgewater was once part of Lake View Township, an independent suburb which was annexed by the city of Chicago in 1889.

What Makes Edgewater Unique?

  • The Bryn Mawr Historic District - is on the lakefront of the Edgewater neighborhood of far-north Chicago in Illinois, USA. It extends along Bryn Mawr Avenue between Broadway Avenue and Sheridan Road. Its most prominent features are the Belle Shore Apartment Hotel, Bryn Mawr Apartment Hotel, Edgewater Beach Apartments, Edgewater Presbyterian Church and the northernmost area of Lincoln Park.
  • Edgewater Community Council, INC - is a voluntary membership organization formed to improve the quality of life of the diverse Edgewater Community. ECC is dedicated to serve all the people of Edgewater whom comprise a mosaic of various racial, ethnic and socio-economic groups, multiple faiths and political views. ECC encourages the maximum participation of residents to promote the physical, educational, cultural, recreational, social, charitable and economic development of the community.
  • Edgewater Historical Society - was founded in January of 1988 to involve the Edgewater community in the preservation of its history. The impetus to form the Society was the 1986 celebration of the Edgewater Centennial, during which the Edgewater Community Council conducted an oral history project. From that project grew a great interest in researching and documenting neighborhood streets and structures.
  • Edgewater Beach Apartments - built in 1927, is the only part of the hotel complex to survive and is a Chicago Landmark and part of the Bryn Mawr Historic District where many Art Deco buildings can be found. It is the only pink high rise building in Chicago.
